Frequently Asked Questions
Solar sales reps keep calling and visiting. Their deals sound too good to be true. Are they?
Some are. Door-to-door solar sales are known for overpromising savings and burying terms in long contracts. Key red flags: high-pressure 'one day only' offers, savings projections based on maximum sunlight scenarios, and 25-year lease agreements where you never own the panels. Always get proposals from at least 3 companies and have an independent solar consultant review any contract before signing.
My solar panels haven't reduced my bill as much as promised. What happened?
Common reasons include: system was undersized for your actual usage, shading from trees or neighboring buildings, incorrect production estimates, or your utility changed net metering rates. Review your original proposal's production estimates vs. actual monitoring data. If the installer misrepresented production, you may have a warranty or misrepresentation claim.
What happens to my solar lease if I sell my house?
This is the #1 solar regret. With a PPA or lease, the new buyer must qualify to assume the contract — many buyers won't, which can kill your sale or force you to buy out the lease at a high cost. Owned systems (cash purchase or solar loan) add value and transfer cleanly. Always consider what selling looks like before signing a lease.
My installer went out of business. Who honors my 25-year panel warranty?
Panel warranties are manufacturer warranties, not installer warranties — they transfer to you regardless of who installed them. Contact the panel brand directly. Inverter warranties work the same way. The labor/workmanship warranty, however, dies with the installer. This is why installer company longevity matters — choose companies with 10+ years in business.
How do I know the tax credit will actually apply to my situation?
The federal ITC (30% as of 2026) applies if you own the system (not lease/PPA), have sufficient federal tax liability, and it's installed on a U.S. residence you own. Consult a tax professional before assuming it applies — if you typically owe little federal tax, you may not benefit fully in year one (but the credit can carry forward). Installers are not tax advisors.
Do I still get an electricity bill after going solar?
Almost certainly yes — unless you have battery storage AND your system produces 100% of your usage (rare). Most solar customers still pay grid connection fees and any net metering charges. The goal is dramatically reducing your bill, not eliminating it entirely. Get a production vs. consumption analysis before signing.
